Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, which stood in for the “Mallory Gallery.”
Movie tricks were at work here, making it appear that the Mallory Gallery was just off a main road (recall the Happiness Hotel bus and Beauregard’s taxi driving up to the gate). As a stately home, the Knebworth House is actually surrounded by an expansive 250-acre grounds.
As of 2019, its residents are Henry Lytton-Cobbold and his family. He had a career in the film industry, living for some years in Los Angeles, and so the house and gardens are frequently used for filming.
They are also open to the public. The grounds include tourist attractions such as an adventure playground and dinosaur park and host various events including classic car rallies. Since 1974, concerts at Knebworth House have featured the likes of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Genesis, The Beach Boys, Elton John, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Oasis.
In August 1986, Queen play their last gig with Freddie Mercury at Knebworth.
Robbie Williams plays to 375,000 people over one historic weekend in August 2003.
Numerous films and television series have been shot at Knebworth, including:
The Avengers – “Invasion of the Earthmen” (1967/68)
The Great Muppet Caper (1981) – exterior of the Mallory Gallery
Haunted Honeymoon (1986) – exterior of the home
Batman (1989) – exterior scenes of Bruce Wayne’s manor
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) – Yule Ball Staircase Scene
The King’s Speech (2010) – Balmoral Party and other scenes
(These are mostly my thoughts and observations. I have occasionally added some of Annie’s thoughts after the recording. I have done my best to attribute info where needed. Many of the more common facts about the film and The Muppets are not directly attributed to any one source. It is not my intention to claim all of the above information as my own.
