The Muppets at Walt Disney World

We break from our Muppets by Minute format to discuss The Muppets at Walt Disney World in detail with special guest Tom Corless from WDW News Today. The Muppets at Walt Disney World was a 1990 TV special that aired on NBC to promote the merger between the Jim Henson Company and the Walt Disney Company. As can be said about the plot of a Muppet movie itself, things didn’t go quite as planned in real life. None the less, this special is a wonderfully written Muppet movie and a delightful snapshot of the Walt Disney World resort in the late 80’s, early 90’s. We take you through the history of the merger as well as scene by scene through the Muppet’s wacky adventures at the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

BACKGROUND ON DISNEY AND THE MUPPETS

In 1989, the company entered merger negotiations with The Walt Disney Company, but the deal fell through following Jim Henson’s unexpected death in 1990.

Following Henson’s death, the company was taken over by Henson’s children.

In 2000 Henson was sold to EM.TV & Merchandising AG, a German media company, but by the end of that year, EM.TV’s stock collapsed, and the company was sold back to the Henson family in 2003.

In 2004, the Jim Henson Company sold the rights to The Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House characters to the Walt Disney Company.

  • The Muppets – Disney: Kermit piggy, all of those characters are now owned by Disney
  • Sesame Street – Sesame Workshop: Big Bird, Ernie Bert, Elmo are all owned by sesame workshop
  • Jim Henson Company – Fraggle Rock, Dark Crystal, Labrynth, Sid the science kid. Have always been owned by the Jim Henson Company

Henson Associates filed an invective-filled lawsuit that charged Disney with infringing on the trademark and copyrights that protect its Muppet characters. It asked a federal court in New York to halt a Muppet 3-D movie scheduled to begin showing next month at Walt Disney World in Florida. Among other niceties, Henson’s suit accused Disney of “sheer corporate arrogance…… corporate greed” and running “roughshod” over the Muppets. For its part, Disney said the suit contained an “enormous distortion of the facts” and painted the Henson heirs as balky children going back on on their famous father’s wishes.

Henson/Katzenberg meeting

Henson/Eisner friendship

The two sides signed a letter of intent to give Disney use of the Muppet characters in its theme parks, television and movies.

Without a formal merger or licensing agreement, Henson plunged into projects with Disney. He built some “walk around” Muppet characters for Florida’s Disney World that would appear on stage shows. He also began working on a new blockbuster movie for Disney World, “Kermit the Frog Presents Muppetvision 3-D.”

But there’s another twist to this story. Disney and Henson are working together–more or less amicably–on the new TV show “Dinosaurs,” which debuts this Friday.

Muppet Movieland

In the Disney-MGM Studios, Imagineers began to work on plans for Muppet Movieland. This new area of the park would have featured two main attractions, The Great Muppet Movie Ride and a 3D film attraction.

The area was meant to be opened by 1991 and signs were even put up showing the future location of the studio.

The Great Muppet Movie Ride

Describing it, Henson said that it would be “a backstage ride explaining how movies are shot…but all the information is wrong.”

The experience would be hosted inside a shadowy castle, complete with special effects such as buzing generators and scientific machines. Riders would board enormous vehicles similar to those used in the Great Movie Ride for their tour. Disney’s Imagineers planned to spend a fortune on the attraction, making it the number one ride at Disney-MGM Studios.

One of the key scenes would see Kermit, Miss Piggy, Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker starring in a parody of the 1931 movie Frankenstein. Gonzo would direct, with a 10-foot Beaker starring as Frankenstein’s monster. The whole affair would be powered by two rats running in a hamster wheel.

Peter Pan would also undergo the parody treatment, with Kermit taking the lead role. Skeeter, Fozzie and Janice (playing the Darling children) would fly over a recreation of London, carried by very obvious harnesses. Miss Piggy, playing Tinkerbell, would crash through the backdrop.

Another scene, based on the Pigs in Space sketch in The Muppets Show, would be set in a recreation of the bridge of the USS Swinetrek. Miss Piggy would lead the fight against a group of “space pirates”.

Just as Statler and Waldorf provide a running commentary on Muppet*Vision 3-D, they would ride around the Great Muppet Movie Ride in a golf cart, discussing it as they went.

MuppetVision 3D

On May 19, 1991 a confidential settlement was reached between the two parties. As part of the agreement, Disney was allowed to continue their development of the 3D Muppet attraction, and they were given merchandising rights for 18 months.

“Knee Deep”

written by Mark Radice

Down here in the swamp

You don’t have to be a grump

We’ve got no shopping mall

Sleep in the lake

‘Cause we don’t have to make no phone call

(No Phone call!)

This is Paradise and it’s so nice to be us nutty frogs

We snooze in the ooze

Whenever we choose

A ribbit upon the logs

Don’t hold the plug

Cause I like my mug to be knee deep

(Knee Deep)

Let’s cut the rug

And catch some bugs

To get knee deep

Knee deep

And when the day is warm

And the mosquitoes swarm

We can keep our bellies full

We just give ’em a whack

To pick out our snack

Don’t that make you drool

Well, the dinosaurs

Could have used some oars

When they sank to the bottom of the bog

But we don’t sink

In the great Gripstink

Cause we broke old Newton’s log

Don’t pull the plug

‘Cause I like my mug to be knee deep

I said knee deep

Let’s cut the rug and catch some bugs

To get knee deep

Knee deep

When the sun sets red

And the world goes to bed

We party like you’ve never seen

And we sing our song

You can ribbit along

I’m so glad to be green

Don’t pull the plug

‘Cause I like my mug

To be knee deep

Knee deep

Don’t pull the plug

‘Cause I like my mug

To be knee deep

Get knee deep

Let’s cut the rug

and catch some bugs

To get knee deep

Ribbit-ribbit-ribbit-ribbit

Knee deep

Ribbit-ribbit-ribbit-ribbit

Knee deep!

“Rockin’ All Around the World”

written by Mark Radice

Get me to the states, let the party begin

Open up the door and let everyone in,

‘Cause you know

We’re rockin’ all around the world!

We get out diggin’ ev’ry gig we play

Makin’ new friends all along the way as we go

Rockin’ all around the world!

Now you don’t have to worry now, I’m sure you’ll agree

If you don’t speak the same language as me

‘Cause when we rock together, we will really be

(Grunts four times)

One big family!!

Rock and rollin’ around the world

Rock and rollin’ the world around

Rock and rollin’ around the world

Now I wanna see their faces just to put up their lights

Wanna lift the people up to brand new heights as we’ll go

Rockin’ all around the world!

When you get the rhythm through the concert halls

Music has the magic while bringing down the walls ’cause you know

We’re rockin’ all around the world!

Now you don’t have to worry now, I’m sure you’ll agree (Agree!)

If you don’t speak the same language as me (As me!)

‘Cause when we rock together, we will really be

1, 2, 3, 4!

One big family!!

Rock and rollin’ around the world

Rock and rollin’ the world around

Rock and rollin’ around the world!

[Instrumental Break]

(Instrumental!)

It’s a small world after all!

Rock and rollin’ around the world

Rock and rollin’ the world around (Olé!)

Rock and rollin’ around the world!

written by Mark Radice

Rowlf:

Well, it will take an awful lot of clouds

To rain on my parade

Lapping lemonades

Man, I got it made

I’ve got a brand new bone to call my own

And all the bills to pay

I’m so glad I stayed

Oh, I’m dogging it

Dogs:

Woof! Woof! Woof!

Now he don’t mind if people call him lazy

Woof! Woof!

If they don’t see his highway his way,

That’s just crazy

Rowlf:

You know that we could just pass the day away

Just barking up a tree

It’s the life for me

I’m dogging it

Dogs:

Woof! Woof! Woof!

Now when you look at that doggone man, oh, man

You say she-bop-she-bop-she-bam-she-bam

You got knack ’em and just back them in their master plan

My, my, my

Rowlf:

I got a real cool deal with lady luck

I got the creeps and smiles with just a buck

I’ve got the rhythm and I’m living it up

Because I’m

All:

Fine, fine, fine

Rowlf:

If you want to hear, let’s make it clear

I wish you all the best

Filled with happiness

Oh, I’m dogging it

Dogs:

Woof! Woof! Woof!

He’s doggin’ it

Woof! Woof! Woof!

Rowlf:

Oh, I’m dogging it

Dogs:

He’s dogging it

And you know we could pass the day away

Rainbow Connection

Written by Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams

Why are there so many

Songs about rainbows

And what’s on the other side

Rainbows are visions

They’re only illusions

And rainbows have nothing to hide

So we’ve been told and some chose to

Believe it

But I know they’re wrong wait and see

Someday we’ll find it

The Rainbow Connection

The lovers, the dreamers and me

Who said that every wish

Would be heard and answered

When wished on the morning star

Somebody thought of that

And someone believed it

And look what it’s done so far

What’s so amazing

That keeps us star gazing

What so we think we might see

Someday we’ll find it

That Rainbow Connection

The lovers the dreamers and me

Have you been fast asleep

And have you heard voices,

I’ve heard them calling my name,

Is this the sweet sound that calls

The young sailors,

The voice might be one and the same.

I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it

It’s something that i’m supposed to be,

Someday we’ll find it

The rainbow connection…

The lovers, the dreamers and me

La lala la lala la la la lala la la la

“We’re Not Gonna Stop”

written by Mark Radice

When the curtain goes up

And we hear the applause,

It’s the moment we live for

And you are the cause

We’re gonna keep on singin’

If you keep bringin’

Your laughter and mayhem

Wahoos and guffaws

And we’re not gonna stop

‘Til we get to the top

With a stomp and a shuffle

A skip and a hop

‘Cause wherever we are

And wherever we go

We’re ready to rock and we’re ready to roll

So raise the curtains

And light the lights

It’s for certain

The time is right

It works together

In works of art

It goes without saying

That it comes from the heart

So raise an eyebrow and lift an ear

We got your smile and we hear you cheer

‘Cause it’s the sound that we adore

They’ll be shouting more, more, more!

And when the cameras flashing,

I will pose a dozen poses

And when my song is over,

I will save a dozen roses

We’re so glad that you’re here we can tell ya we know

‘Cause we hold you so dear just as usual we know

‘Cause as long as we’re in show-biz

And all we know is we’ll give you our best stuff

Ruff!

And we’re not gonna stop

‘Til we get to the top

With a stomp and a shuffle

A skip and a hop

‘Cause wherever we are

And wherever we go

We go!

We’re taking the stage and stealing the show!

So raise the curtains and light the lights

It’s for certain the time is right

It works together in works of art

It goes without saying that it comes from the heart
